Hand Made Life is a creative retail space in Franschhoek, South Africa, founded by Cindy and Stuart Douglas. This creative duo are passionate about local design and craftsmanship, and have curated a store showcasing hand crafted wooden furniture and South African designed and hand made lifestyle products.
Cindy is a serial entrepreneur, foodie, creative director and the founder and owner of Coco Africa Design. She works with her team of talented woodworking craftsmen in their Franschhoek-based workshop where they create beautiful timeless and functional everyday products. As a kid, Stu helped his dad with boat building. He also spent school holidays restoring Cape Country furniture. While completing his PhD in the States he couldn’t help but hang out at home wood shops in Houston. He set up his wood shop in Franschhoek in the early 2000s.
The creative designer-maker journey to date has culminated in the Luca, Ruskin, Pierneef and Change ranges, each representing carefully considered and professionally made wooden pieces with dado-rabbet joinery drawing inspiration from the late Sam Maloof. Stu has adapted and refined this joinery, resulting in unique bespoke, editioned functional art. Good ergonomics and timeless style characterise his ranges of heirloom furniture.
Hand Made Life is now an outlet for Stu’s true passion.

Sourced products include hand turned bowls and pens, Franschhoek Wild honey and fynbos salts, scented candles poured in porcelain pieces, loom woven hand towels, fynbos perfume, wooden replica miniature cars, hand-forged steel kitchen implements, silk and bead earrings, handmade olive oil soaps, laptop bags made from recycled paper to name a few.
